Peter Biskind focuses his examination of indie filmmaking on three personalities--Robert Redford, the founder of the Sundance Film Festival, and Harvey and Bob Weinstein, co-chairmen of Miramax Films, now owned by the Walt Disney Company. Biskind traces the meteoric rise of indie film, which germinated with movies by now well-known directors--including Steven Soderbergh, Quentin Tarantino, and David O. Russell--financing their own films on minuscule budgets. His discussions of the industry contrast the differing styles of the players, with the blustery, volatile Weinstein brothers dominating.
